By engaging early coursework in biology, chemistry, math, and physics, you will be rewarded with a world of opportunity across every possible health career. John Carroll graduates are thriving as clinicians, technologists, and researchers, sprinting into a future where people will live longer, healthier, and more active lives, free of pain, injury, and disease.
To thrive as a health professional, you will need to merge interpersonal, cognitive, and system skills. At JCU, you will go beyond basic science to gain clinical, data, and information literacies.
Cleveland is home to some of the world’s most advanced clinical and research talent and resources.
Core classes in theology, philosophy, and humanities give pre-health students valued perspective and purpose.
Your future health career will merge core sciences, clinical data, and a growing number of health technologies. John Carroll University offers a variety of pathways into a nursing degree, medical, and other professional schools, and emerging careers in public health and biotechnology.
Degrees in biology, chemistry, or physics and the various concentrations within each remain the most proven pathway into health careers. Most medical/dental/pharmacy schools, for example, require one year each of biology, physics, chemistry and organic chemistry with laboratory (along with mathematics).
Degrees in nursing or exercise science begin with the same biology, chemistry, math, and physics prerequisites. For undecided pre-health students, those prerequisites will satisfy requirements for JCU 3:2 joint programs and most PT, OT, physician assistant, and other professional schools. Early experiential opportunities — whether in research or direct patient care — will help you to choose the right career and path.
Degrees in engineering physics, mathematics, data science, computer science, and other quantitative science disciplines will connect you with health/technology careers in everything from drug discovery to genomics.
In addition to programs in psychology, mental health, neuroscience, early childhood development and social work, John Carroll is developing new programs and research expertise in autism care and autism research.
At JCU, you’ll be learning in the heart of the nation’s top healthcare region. Like the more than 500 alumni working within the Cleveland Clinic, you will have access to internships, experts, and alumni mentors across the region’s three major healthcare systems (Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the MetroHealth System). These alumni give generously of their time and will inspire and guide your career.
Studies show that great college outcomes grow from five high impact experiences: internships, research, service learning, immersion trips, and student employment. Our students find diverse clinical, research, employment and volunteer experiences in Northeast Ohio and nationally.
The $66 million Dolan Center for Science and Technology equips you with state-of-the-art classrooms and lab spaces where you’ll have opportunities to gain valuable hands-on experiences beginning in your first year. You’ll collaborate with faculty mentors using advanced equipment, learning the latest techniques in your field.
JCU students founded and operate the campus EMS system, translating their Emergency Medical Technician-Basic or Emergency Medical Responder training and certification into another layer of campus safety and response. Students work with University Heights Fire Department for ambulance transport when necessary, and with the John Carroll University Police Department and the Office of Residence Life.
John Carroll pre-health students pursue a range of health-related careers, including allopathic and osteopathic medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, bioinformatics, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant, veterinary medicine, and more.
