Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is the cornerstone of coach education in Canada. Coaches of all 65 federally recognized sports receive their training and certification through the NCCP. The NCCP is for coaches at every context and for those coaching every age of athlete. More information on the NCCP can be found at the Coaches Association of Ontario site or at the Coaches Association of Canada site. Coaches taking education through the OCC will have their results and records stored in The Locker against your unique NCCP number. If you already have an NCCP number you do not need to create another one but if you don’t already have one then you must create one before registering for a course. Club Coach Youth is a one-day workshop designed for coaches who do not require certification but become involved in coaching on a voluntary (and often short-term) basis. Participants tend to work with curlers of all ages who are new to the sport, but most particularly with youth curlers.
Coaches who take this two-day workshop become “Club Coach Trained”. This workshop does not lead to certification. “Club Coach” is a program designed to enhance the skill set of the coach or instructor who functions primarily at the club level but whose teams are starting their competitive experience. The Club Coach will be competent in training curlers from youth to masters, with skill levels of beginning to intermediate.
Competition Coach is a two-day workshop designed for coaches who plan to work with athletes who are practicing and competing together. Competition Coach leads to certification which includes the submission of a coaching portfolio, an in-person evaluation, and successful completion of the Making Ethical Decisions module (see below).
The Competition Development Program, administered and delivered by Curling Canada, is the next “level” of education for certified Competition Coaches. Coaches who plan to coach adult athletes competing at the Brier, Scotties, Mixed Doubles and Olympic Trials require this designation, as do coaches who plan to pursue further education like the Advanced Coaching Diploma.
Course Cost: $80 + HST By successfully completing the Making Ethical Decisions (MED) training, coaches will be fully equipped to handle ethical situations with confidence and surety. MED training helps coaches identify the legal, ethical, and moral implications of difficult situations that present themselves in the world of team and individual sport. MED training is a cornerstone of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), and leaves coaches with no doubt as to what to do when the going gets tough. MED – Curling is the same content as the Multi-sport Module offered by the Coaches Association of Ontario (see below), just delivered in a curling environment using curling Coach Developers.
